UL test reports document testing against the safety standards applicable to the product and can support e-commerce product compliance reviews. Applications require product documents and samples, with the report issued after successful testing.
1. Certification Overview
As Amazon's role in global commerce grows, electrical products listed on the platform require relevant UL reports issued by laboratories with ISO 17025 accreditation to remain on sale or have listings restored. If a product purchased by a competitor or customer lacks a safety report to the relevant standards, they may instruct a US lawyer to request that Amazon stop sales and seek court proceedings to destroy the company's products held by Amazon. This may effectively exclude the company from the North American market. Many sellers report receiving such notices and having sales suspended or listings removed after failing to provide UL test reports within the specified time.
UL Certification vs. UL Test Reports
UL certification: A voluntary certification requiring product testing and factory inspections every quarter. It involves higher costs, a longer timeline and strict factory audits.
UL test report: A report issued after successful testing to the applicable UL standards. It costs less, takes less time and requires no factory inspection. It can support Amazon reviews but is not valid for customs clearance.
