Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds with two or more benzene rings. They include more than 150 compounds such as naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene and pyrene. Fifteen compounds are classified as PAHs in this context. Benzo(a)pyrene was the first environmental chemical carcinogen identified and is highly carcinogenic, so it is commonly used as a representative PAH. It accounts for 1%–20% of all carcinogenic PAHs.

V. Certification Requirements
PAHs test limits:
1. Materials that may be placed in the mouth, and toys for children under 3 years: BaP<0.2 ppm; total<0.2 ppm
2. Materials that may have prolonged skin contact (more than 30 seconds), and toys not covered by Category 1: BaP<1 ppm; total<10 ppm
3. Materials that may have brief skin contact (no more than 30 seconds) or no contact: BaP<20 ppm; total<100 ppm
Both German GS certification and EU REACH Annex XVII set PAHs requirements, but these differ: GS tests 15 substances, while REACH Annex XVII tests 8. It is therefore necessary to confirm the applicable requirements before testing.
6. Test Items
The 18 principal PAHs are naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.
