Certification Overview

QI

Qi is a wireless charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the organization promoting global standardization of wireless charging. It uses electromagnetic induction and emphasizes compatibility and universality. Products carrying the Qi mark can charge using Qi wireless chargers. Certified and listed products meet the relevant safety and performance specifications and support compatibility across certified brands and models.

Industry Schemes QI — Detailed Introduction

1. Certification Overview

3. Product Scope

1. By use and form, products are divided into power banks, embedded products and chargers.
2. Products are also divided into single-transmitter and multiple-transmitter types. A single-transmitter product charges only one device at a time, while a multiple-transmitter product can charge several devices simultaneously.

4. Test Items

1. Conformity testing
Several conformity test laboratories are available in China. At least five prototypes must be submitted, with one initially assigned to conformity testing. After passing, that sample remains at the Authorized Test Laboratory (ATL). Main test items include:
(1) Timing of the communications protocol between transmitter and receiver
(2) Power output capability through translation along the X, Y and Z axes
(3) Maximum power transfer capability
(4) Foreign object detection
2. Interoperability testing
There are two Interoperability Test Centers (IOCs) worldwide: one in Belgium, Europe, and one in South Korea, Asia.
After conformity testing is passed, the ATL sends prototypes to the laboratory in Belgium or South Korea for interoperability testing. Once this is completed, the applicant confirms completion on the website. The product is then listed on the WPC website and can be found using its product ID. Tested products remain on the test bed.
WPC requires all test samples to undergo compatibility testing with all previously certified samples. For example, a wireless charging transmitter must be tested with all WPC Qi-certified receivers, including phones. After conformity testing, products proceed to interoperability testing. If they fail, samples must be returned for modification. Both conformity and interoperability testing must then be repeated; the revised product cannot proceed directly to interoperability testing alone.

5. Certification Process

1. Provide product information for consultation and a quotation.
2. After signing the contract, provide the required documents.
3. Apply for WPC membership.
4. Submit product specifications and related information for review.
5. Provide samples for conformity testing at a local laboratory.
6. Submit samples for interoperability testing.
7. Confirm the final product information.
8. Register the product on the WPC website to complete the process.
Note: Qi certification differs by product type. Products above 5 W using the Qi protocol require EPP certification; products above 5 W using a proprietary protocol require only BPP certification.

6. Certification Timeline & Validity

If a product passes all tests on the first attempt, testing normally takes 4–5 weeks. Including transit and turnaround time, certification generally takes approximately 1.5–2 months.

7. Factory Inspection

No factory inspection required

8. Important Notes

1. Qi certification is available only to WPC members, so manufacturers must first join the consortium.
2. Qi certification testing must be completed by a WPC-authorized laboratory to be valid.
3. Qi certification is voluntary and is not a local regulatory requirement. Products must still meet applicable requirements such as CE, RoHS, REACH and FCC.
4. Manufacturers currently using the Qi standard to produce products are temporarily exempt from patent technology fees. Whether this remains free is subject to further notice.

9. Mark Usage Guidelines

The mark may be combined with the product identifier (Qi-ID) in the registration database and the word “Certified,” using the alignment, size and typeface specified in the Trademark Guidelines.
